How does a twist shifter work?
Twist shifters are used by twisting the shifter — placed over the handlebar and serving as the rider’s handgrip — forward or backward to make the gears move up or down. Mountain bikers prefer twist shifters so they can change gears without taking a hand off the handlebars and potentially losing control of the bike.
Are twist shifters good?
As others have said, the ability to go through a large chunk of gears with a single twist is nice. I have had one accidental shift in the 23 years of using twist shifters. The one negative is that twist shifters can limit the types of grips you can use (and no colors, only available in black grips).
