How can I elevate my bike without a stand?
Turning the seat around backwards on its stem may be helpful. I use two high chairs (with straight backrest) With one or two broomsticks inbetween them to hold the bike up. My solution for this is a kickstand. It keeps the bicycle upright with both wheels on the ground.
Can you work on a bike upside down?
Shimano even recommends against turning the bicycle upside down. In a manual for its hydraulic disc brakes it says: “The disc brake is not designed to work when the bicycle is upside down. If the bicycle is turned upside down or on its side, the brake may not work correctly, and a serious accident could occur.

To raise the front wheel, I generally use a simple scissor-style bike jack under the front of the skid plate. If you don’t have a center stand or one is not available for your bike, you can use a hydraulic motorcycle jack under your skid plate to lift the bike.
Should you put a kickstand on a mountain bike?
Lastly, unlike a commuter or errand bike, you don’t make a lot of stops on a mountain bike so a kickstand is not as essential. If the mountain bike is being used for a purpose other than mountain biking, then installing a kickstand isn’t really a big deal. They can catch on stuff.

A paddock stand is essentially a metal contraption that keeps a motorcycle stable while it is stationary. Don’t confuse it with a side-stand or a centre-stand of your motorcycle as with a paddock stand, you can keep one wheel, or both wheels in the air.
