2008 Tour de Schwinn
History Page
2008 the 5th try.
The last year. Ok that was Mike's plan
anyways. With the use of a second machine we were able to open the field up to
an additional 4 riders and have some riders going at the same time. This added a
bit of fun to the event.
THE START STAGE 1 : PROLGOUE The Prologue was a
familiar course with familiar results, somewhat.

So once again Francis was in yellow
after the prologue and the teams then were set based on the results.
STAGE 2 THE WALL This stage went back
to the old course, 6miles each miles saw .2 miles of 8% down hill .6 of a
flat then .2 @ 8% uphill. As in years past each lap seemed to drain the riders
more and more. Ron Moore took top honors this race and moved into 2nd on GC 36
seconds behind Francis Manfred. Kevin Wisher took second on the stage with Tom
Linn and Andrew Miabaum 3rd and 4th.
STAGE 3 THE STAIRWAY. The stairway
was your basic course like in years past with flat up flat up flat up them over
6.2 miles of riding tested the riders just a bit. This stage should shake
the GC up a bit, the peleton just let Ryan Hulce go, not expecting him to
be able to maintain the pace he set from the start which ended up giving him the
stage win. And Walt kosiak also was a big surprise on the stage, taking
second. There was a crash in the
field that seems to have slowed down some of the favorites. Rumor has it a
dog took Kevin Wisher down and caused the slow up with a few other riders.
Ron Moore took over the lead in the GC
STAGE 4 TEAM TIME TRIAL 7.4 miles(5.5
flat with a 1% down hill for the last 1.9 miles) A very fast course one
which the American Flyers took advantage of, winning the event and helping team
member Ron Moore extend his lead over Francis Manfred from :06 to 1:13.
The Flying Squirrels came in second with Time Lords in 3rd. Francis Manfred's
team came in last.
STAGE 5 THE HILL CLIMB As the name
clearly states there was climbing involved on this stage, in fact the road hit
12%. Ron Moore did not fair well do to illness and lost the GC number one spot
however it was to his team Captain Clark Griffin who finished 2nd on the stage
behind Tom McMahan. Kevin Wisher also abandoned during this stage.
STAGE 6 MIKE'S REVENGE. Know as the
hardest stage of the tour, Mike's Revenge, has been known as the make or break
stage. Do well here and you have a good chance for the top of the GC, do badly
and its time to think of next year. And this year it seems that some people had
been saving themselves for this stage. Tom Linn won the stage with a all out
flyer for his team the American Flyers. Mitch Reeves kept with Tom until the
last climb but could not match him on the final bit. Mitch finished second with
Stan Shuey coming in 3rd. The GC got a bit of change as expected after this
stage; Clark Griffin droped to 5th as Francis Manfred took over the lead. Though
it was a small lead for Mitch Reeves was in 2nd less then 1 second behind
Francis. Jeff Bell's ride placed in 3rd on GC just 15 seconds back. In fact
things were a lot closer this year than in the past the average GC defiect was
only 1:35 at this point which was 2 minutes less then the 3 previous years.
Francis looked like he might finally get the win he had been going for, however
he had been here before. Could he hold off the attacks from so many riders who
were closer then ever to him at this point. It all came down to the last ride.
STAGE 7 EPILOGUE This race was done in time trial style
with the last place rider off first and the first place rider off last. It is
also the same course as the Prologue which was done to allow the riders to see
how much they improved over the last few weeks. So the stage was set, the
GC was tight and alot of riders had high hopes of winning the Tour. The riders
were to ride in reverse GC order with the leader Francis Manfred going last. Ron
Moore set a great time and looked like he might be able to not only take the
stage but redeem himself and steel the victory from Francis. However at the end
of the day Ron came up 4 seconds short of victory giving Francis his Tour win
after 3 years of coming in 2nd place.
