2005 Tour de Schwinn
History Page
Year two. The second annual
Tour de Schwinn, yes people enjoyed the event enough for us to have a second
one. This year saw several changes to the Tour, changes that we hoped would make
the event more fair to all the participants and make it a bit easier on the
organizers First it was decided to limit the riders to 20 and only allow
Break Away Bicycle Club members in the Tour. This left us with five four
man teams, so some teams had to go... out was last year's Y.O. (young and old),
gone was the O.U.T. team ( once upon a time) and say bye bye to the BABC team
(BreakAway Bicycle Club team). The BABC mostly was eliminated cause some one
pointed out that we were now all BABC riders. So that actually left us with four
teams so we had to come up with one, enter the American Flyers!!! (Kevin Costner
would be proud). Then we added or should say changed the Time Trial to a Team
Time Trial, which needed some explaining: First remember how the Tour is run (
each rider comes into the store one at a time and rides one race a week) So then how were we going to have a team ride together,
we weren't and we did not. What we did was just average the times of members of
a team and then assign that time to every member of the team. I hope that's
clear cause that is how it's done. We also had a new handicapping system
that we ran through a few test before we started the tour this year.
Saw that it was good and went for it.
Year two also saw a few
minor course changes but nothing worth mentioning here. We still had seven weeks
of racing facing our brave riders and riders still had to deal with Mike for the
duration of the Tour.
HOW THINGS HAPPENED!!!
2005 Prologue (Stage
1)
The 2005 Tour opened just like the year before,
with a short 2.3 mile prologue which we used to select teams. The Prologue saw
Francis Manfred take top honors again, this time however with a new handicapping
system Francis would go into stage 2 (the Wall) as the Tour Leader and a time
gap over the other riders, unlike last year where everyone was assigned the same
time after the prologue. Once again the question came about, would Francis
keep his lead and for how long? Andrew Maibaum, who had won the 2004 TdS, was
sitting in last place after the Prologue. Some wondered if this was a cleaver
strategy, since he had started low in the standings in 2004. Could he do a come
from behind and jump into the lead quickly again this year? Only time would
tell. Second place in the Prologue went to Charlie Skoog, who was then
picked as Team Captain for the Time Lords. 3rd went to the young Seth "Steve"
Wall.
STAGE 2 "THE WALL" The 2005
course for "The Wall" was the same course as in 2004, however since we had
turned the Velodyne to face the opposite direction at Kokomo Cycling and
Fitness, we told the races that they were to ride the course in reverse
direction from the previous year. No one bought it, or even cared. The
Wall, in case you have forgotten or never knew is a one mile course ( .2 miles
down @ 8% grade: .6 mile at 0% and then .2 miles up @ 8%). This course is run 6
times! Rookie Kevin Wisher took top honors for "The Wall", keeping Andrew Maibaum from doing a repeat of 2004. Andrew did manage to come in 2nd
place with Seth Wall grabbing 3rd for the stage. Kevin's win moved him up to 3rd
in the GC but is was Seth Wall who was the big winner by taking over the GC led
from Francis Manfred. Francis slipped only one spot to 2nd. Andrew would be now
found in 7th, however this would as close as he would get to the yellow jersey
for 2005.
STAGE 3 "THE STAIRWAY"
Kasey Bickel took the stage win on the shallow climbs of this course for the
second year. This kept him in the lead for most stage wins in tour history (both
years so far ) it also moved him from last place to 9th in the GC. Meanwhile
Seth Wall remained in 1st place and Roxane Burrous moved up to 2nd. Francis
Manfred dropped one spot to 3rd. In the Team classification( now something
people started to take an interest in) the American Flyers moved to first with
the Big Ring Wraiths just 28 seconds behind them. The question was what would
the Team Time Trial do to things this year.
STAGE 4 TEAM TIME TRIAL In
2004 the time trial was an individual event, 2005 saw a change to that, it was
now a team event. This meant that each member of a team would receive the
average time of all four members of the team. It also meant that an individual
riders chance for a Tour win would be effected by the other 3 members of his/
her team, for better or for worse. The 2005 Team Time Trial event started off
with our last place team riding first on the day. This was the Majestic Moose
Team, headed up by team captain Markus Naegeli the Moose were hoping to help Tom
Linn with a good team time. Tom was the best placed Moose sitting in 6th place
overall. Their time of 16:13 for this 6 mile course looked to be a good one but
four more teams were yet to have their say in the matter. The 4th placed team
and next to start was the Time Lords ( Charlie Skoog, Kasey Bickel, Keith Crail
and Randy Simpson) who out did the Moose with a 15:49.This would not be the best
time of the day but a good time none the less, especially considering
Keith had a major front derailuer problem, Randy had a flat and Kasey
dropped his chain. All mechanicals which lost them some time. In the end the
Lords would not rule the day, they would be 4th on the day as they were 4th in
the Team GC to start. The team in the middle (3rd in GC and 3rd to start the
day) was the Kokomo Cycling and Fitness Team, 31 seconds from 1st and only 1
second from 2nd. This squad of riders was lead by Francis Manfred and had
defending champion Andrew Maibaum on it as well as Shawn Leonard and Rookie Ron
Moore. Francis led the way and pulled his team in with a time of 15:32 which
once again was the best time to that point. The only problem was 2 more
teams were yet to go. The Big Rings Wraiths were 4th to start the day, pushing
big gears and going fast was very familiar to this group hence the team
name. As Roxane, Mitch "Superman" Reeves, Steve "The Cannibal / Ralph" Peugh and
Terry Bouge crossed the line the Wraiths had the led. 15:21 was their time which
once again proved the merit of power. So Captain Lee Flasche would have to guide
his American Flyers team to new heights to over take the Wraiths and with
3 tour rookies it looked like a tall order, however they did start last for a
reason. After all they were in first place at the start of the day. As Lee
brought home Troy Clear, Kevin Wisher and tour leader Seth Wall, victory was
theirs for the day. Their time of 15:15 not only bested everyone else on the day
it also ensured that Seth Wall would stay in Yellow for one more week, it also
moved fellow Flyer Troy Clear in to 2nd place. Roxane Burrous then dropped to
3rd in GC with Francis Manfred going to 4th. This left the American Flyer first
in the TEAM GC and 1st & 2nd in the individual GC as well. The BRW stayed in
second on Team GC, in fact nothing changed in the Team GC except that the AmF
gained a few more seconds on the other teams.
STAGE 5 "The Hill Climb"
The Team Time Trial kept Seth
Wall in the led, his team pulled though and gave him what he needed to stay in
yellow and increase his lead. It also put Troy Clear, also of the AmF's, into
second. However the Hill Climb was the start of a different race, what was hard
before was about to turn extreme. So with the climbs getting much tougher could
small Seth Wall do well, could he handle the steeper slopes of the mountain
stage? It would be a hard stage on all and in the end the big names would
be at the top of the list. In forth on the stage was our tour leader Seth Wall,
just ahead of him was Markus Naegeli in 3rd. Charlie Skoog of the Time Lords was
able to capture 2nd on the day and he was not the only Time Lord to do well for
Kasey Bickel held in to the last to take 5th place. Taking the win for this stage
was none other then Francis Manfred who made up enough time in the hills to over
take young Mr Wall (Seth). Francis was now once again in yellow (leading the
tour), Seth minimized the loss and was now found in 2nd on GC with Charlie Skoog
rounding out the top 3. Roxane Burrous slipped to 4th and Seth's team mate Troy
Clear was now going the wrong way and dropped from 2nd to 5th. Tom " Capt.
Ironlegs" Linn was now for the 3rd time this year to be found in 6th place. With
all these big names now at the top of the GC the pressure was mounting on the
shoulders of Francis Manfred, could he keep the wolves at bay? Meanwhile
in the Team GC, The Big Ring Wraiths over took the American Flyers by 1 second
and the KCF team were in 3rd only 15 seconds out of 1st. The Time Lords and
Majestic Moose were still in 4th and 5th respectivley.
STAGE 6 "Mike's Revenge" Mike's Revenge, like in 2004,
was the longest and possibly the hardest course of the tour. 7.5 miles of
torture with climb after climb, a brutal course that looked to favor Tour leader
Francis Manfred. Manfred was known for his speed and more importantly now for
his endurance so it seemed as he would have done well here. At the end of the
stage however he was a disappointing 5th, this was good enough however to keep
the yellow jersey on his back. Our stage winner was Time Lord Keith Crail who
made an early breakaway and was able to hold it. The GC was then mixed up again,
Francis remained in 1st, but Seth Wall lost more time on the day and found
himself now down in 6th. While his fellow teammate,Troy Clear, moved back
up to 2nd. Roxane (BRW)
over took Charlie Skoog (TL) for 3rd and Steve Peugh (BRW) climbed his way up to
5th in the GC. Speaking of the BRW's they extended their lead in the Team GC
while KCF moved up to 2nd (+:53) and the Amf were in 3rd. One final note
on the stage, American Flyer's Lee Flasche road this grueling with fractured
ribs which he received from a fall a couple days before the ride. He
was later awarded the Tyler Hamilton Tough Rider Award in honor of his
toughness, not bad for a 60 year old.
STAGE 7 "EPILOGUE"
The final stage. The battle field was set,
Francis Manfred had fought his way back into the lead and looked poised for one
more assault to finish off the competition so he could win this years tour.
Rookie Troy Clear had been on the move of late and was now only 21 seconds
behind Francis, looking to spoil the Professors victory. Troy was not the only
one who was trying to steal victory for themselves: Roxane Burrous was not
resting on her heels and had kept a short leash on the dogs of war, she was only
down 37 seconds. To add to things the Epilogue, which was the same 2.3 miles
course as the prologue, was to be road as time trial with the riders starting in
reverse order of the GC (last place first off and first place off last). So the
riders would start in this order
Joe Dibble: Majestic
Moose
Andrew "Motto" Maibaum of the Kokomo Cycling & Fitness team
Lee "Lance" Flasche: American Flyers*
Jim Burrous: Majestic Moose
Keith Crail: Time Lords
Kasey Bickel: Time Lords
Kevin Wisher: American Flyers
Randy Simpson: Time Lords
Ron Moore: Kokomo Cycling & Fitness
Terry Bogue: Big Ring Wraiths
Markus Naegeli: Majestic Moose
Mitch "Superman" Reeves: Big Ring Wraiths
Shawn Leonard: Kokomo Cycling & Fitness
Tom "Captain IronLegs" Linn : Majestic Moose
Seth Wall : American Flyers
Steve "the Cannibal" Peugh: Big Ring Wraiths
"Too Tall" Charlie Skoog: Time Lords
Roxane "Wonder Woman" Burrous: Big Ring Wraiths
Troy Clear: American Flyers
Francis -The Professor- Manfred: Kokomo Cycling Fitness
Joe Dibble took the stage win
which was the only glory he was awarded this year, Joe finished 19th in the GC.
* Lee Flasche was forced to abandon the tour as he was unable to ride the last
race due to his fractured ribs. Andrew Maibum was 2nd on the stage with Kevin
Wisher taking 3rd. But the real story was how did the top 3 GC contenders do?
Roxane finished her race with a 6:04 time(taking 17th on the stage), this was
enough to keep her in 3rd on GC. Troy Clear came back with a time of 5:38
besting Francis Manfred 6:10 enough to take the yellow Jersey winning the 2005
Tour de Schwinn.
In the Team GC the Big Ring
Wraiths took top honor , American Flyers were second (+30)
