2004-2008 Tour de Schwinn Facts
(or really boring information
that no one cares about. Have fun geeks.)
As of 2/12/08
The Tour de Schwinn was the brain child of Markus Naegeli with the help of Larry Barnhart and Mike Shult. The Tour was first done in 2004 and was open the first year to anyone that cared to do it, every year after riders were required to be members of the Break Away Bicycle Club. This event has been held at Kokomo Cycling and Fitness, with the help of the Break Away Bicycle Club. Markus was named the Tour de Schwinn Director for 2004. That meaningless title has since been held by Mike Shult. The Tour web page is hosted on the Kokomo Cycling and Fitness web site and is maintained by Larry Barnhart and Mike Shult (mostly by the latter in '07 and '08). Each year the Tour has been run using a trainer known as a Schwinn Velodyne (owned by Larry Barnhart with a second machine used in 2008, owned by Andrew Maibaum). The tour is run over the course of seven weeks with each rider scheduled to do one course per week. Each year the Tour has used a handicapping system designed to level the playing field so that all riders had a fair chance in the "race". This or I should say these systems have been changed slightly every year in the hopes to improve them. Markus Naegeli designed the first system used ('04 version) and Mike Shult has been perverting them ever since. An average of about 200 hours of volunteer work goes into the Tour Annually (this is estimated and not likely accurate at all). Each year various prizes and awards have been given to the riders during and after the end of the tour. Most the money collected for the event have been used for those prizes. GC places and other facts based on HANDICAPPED RESULTS unless otherwise noted.

MORE TO COME AS I THINK OF THINGS OR IF PEOPLE REQUEST OTHER FACTS OR TRIVIA
TEAM NAMES
American Flyers comes from the movie of the same name starring Kevin Costner and is about bicycle racing, sort of.
Big Ring Wraiths: comes from the fact that those on the team the first year like to puch a big gear or are mashers; the Wraith( or Ring Wraiths) comes from The Lord of the Rings.
Time Lords: Ever see Dr. Who, the British SciFi? Well Dr. Who was a Time Lord.
KCF: Kokomo Cycling and Fitness. Get it?
Majestic Moose: just sounded cool and moose are big powerful animals. Also there is a whole bit about moose in the credits of Monty Pythons : The Holly Grail
Flying Squirrels: kind of a mix of things but mostly cause we had moose already so we needed a flying squirrel(s) for the Rocky and Bullwinkle connection. Don't remember why we needed that connection but it sounded good at the time. Oh look Moose and Squirrel!!!
Years past we had: the BABC team kind of the club name.
The Y .O. : young and old cause that was who was on that team... young guys and old guys.
The OUT team. Once upon a Time team. The first tour was the year after "O N C E" stopped sponsoring a pro cycling team.
***AVERAGE TIMES AND SPEED BASED ON ACTUAL NOT HANDICAPPED TIMES AND SPEED
Francis has most tour stage wins @ 7 (counting prologue which he has won every year & 2 other stage wins. Not counting prologues then the most stage wins would go to Kasey Bickel with 4 wins as of stage 5 of the 2008 TdS)
Markus has never won a stage, he is the only 5 time tour rider to never win one.
Todd and Clark missed 2005 tour for unknown reasons, Jeff missed '06
Both Charlie and Tom Linn missed 2007 due to injury
6 if you count Diane Bickel who signed up in 2004 but did not finish the prologue before abandoning.
770 would have been the number except for those abandons. Over 763 if you count the very few rerides done because of malfunctions and the rides done by possible substitutes and the course test rides. Est. 810.
26 riders @ 32.5 miles each
706 possible: 20 riders however Lee Flasche did not ride the last course of 2.3 miles
764 possible: 20 riders: Jeff Bell abandoned after time trial.
20 riders @ 42.9 miles each (additional miles were ridden by subs but not counted here)
969.6 possible: 24 riders @ 40.4 however Kevin Wisher abandoned after time trial. Ryan also abandoned but the rides were still done for him: kind of.
as of 2007 results
A 5th woman signed up for the tour but never did it. (D.B. : see #5)
2004 the time trial was not a team event and did not use the "pack" to assist the riders.
